Since the automation project requires that each book be examined individually, we are using this time to locate titles that the librarian wants to do something with, for example:
- new titles that have not been checked out more than twice are pulled for display instead of being re-shelved
- books with mold anywhere in them are pulled to be discarded as they are a health hazard
- books whose covers are mangled are pulled for repair
- books that are incorrectly shelved or cataloged, such as books that are E for Easy but have been shelved with F for Fiction need to be replaced.
- This library also separates paperback from hardcover and so we pull any that are mixed up as well .

Thank you John Muir Middle School!
Greetings Russ and Veronica,
I wanted to thank you both for being wonderful hosts. I came to you with many questions and received valuable guidance for my years to come as a school librarian. I feel much better prepared to implement policies that have been shown to be successful. I am now able to weed the collection and have a clear understanding of how to set weeding criteria. What sometimes seemed huge and looming tasks (computer updates and cleaning, ordering supplies, etc.) were shown to be manageable when attacked with a plan. Thank you Russ for taking the time to discuss the processes that you use and the reasons behind your decision making. I look forward to finding ways to collaborate around such things as the California Young Reader Medal contest and creating new programs that work for our student population.
Thank you Veronica for showing me how to care for a vast textbook collection and ensure that our books are usable for years to come. Your textbooks are beautifully maintained and I envy the quality throughout. I can only hope to become as thorough as you in the years to come.
